The YF4C program is designed to make learning to fish as safe and as enjoyable as possible. The boat captains and crew have all learned that preparing for a fishing trip using a checklist is the most effective way of ensuring a safe, pleasant and successful trip. We don’t want this experienced affected by something that is easily preventable. Please consider the following when preparing for the fishing trip:

  • Wear a long sleeve shirt, preferably your YF4C Fishing Clinic shirt. Consider the current weather conditions and dress in layers if appropriate.

  • Wear shorts or pants that can get wet and dry easily. We won’t swim, but spray sometimes blows into the boat. Again, consider the current weather conditions.

  • Wear sunblock. Wear sunblock especially if you are fair skinned. The water is highly reflective and steady wind also causes a burn.

  • Wear sunglasses, polarized if possible. The water is highly reflective and polarization reduces glare.

  • Wear a brimmed hat.

  • Wear non-marking shoes, or sandals, appropriate for the weather.

  • Eat a reasonable breakfast before arriving at the boat ramp. A boat ride on an completely empty or very full stomach can be a bad thing for everyone on-board. Pack a low sugar, high protein lunch or snack in a 1 gallon zip lock bag. The boat captains will store the lunch/snack bag in the ice chest on-board the boat.

  • Place an empty 1 quart zip lock bag in the 1 gallon zip lock lunch bag to protect your valuables while onboard the boat. This is inexpensive protection for wallets and personal electronics.

  • Do not pack soda, energy drinks or candy. The boat captains will not allow these on board the boat. Gatorade and Powerade is acceptable. The boat captains will have iced bottled water on board.

  • Make provision in your vehicle to carry a rigged 7 foot fishing pole home with you after the fishing trip.

  • This is a catch-and-release program. We will not keep any of the fish caught during this fishing trip.

  • Be at the boat ramp at dawn. The boats will leave the dock promptly at safe light, no exceptions. It is unfair to the entire group to wait for any one individual. The boats will return to the same dock at 2:00PM.

  • While we do not anticipate any emergencies, we ask you, the parent or guardian, to be available in the event of an emergency situation.
